About Aviation and Maritime Security
Most aviation and maritime security screening roles do not require a state or territory security licence. These roles operate under national transport security regulations, with screening functions governed by the Department of Home Affairs rather than state-based security licensing bodies.
To work in regulated aviation or maritime screening roles, individuals are typically required to hold:
- An Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) or Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
- Department of Home Affairs Screener Accreditation
An ASIC or MSIC is mandatory for employment in screening roles, as it authorises access to secure airport or maritime areas. These cards can only be issued where an operational need is confirmed by an employer, usually after a job offer is made. For those not yet employed, a Job Ready ASIC or Job Ready MSIC may be obtained to allow access to security-restricted training materials during study, without employer sponsorship.
Following qualification completion, aviation and maritime screeners must also complete the Department of Home Affairs Screener Accreditation Scheme. This process is arranged and supported by the employer and includes supervised workplace training, formal assessment by an approved accreditor, and ongoing re-accreditation requirements.
While not required for most transport screening roles, holding a state or territory security licence may provide additional employment opportunities in broader security roles outside aviation and maritime screening environments.
