ACT 1B Bodyguard

The ACT 1B Bodyguard course delivers the Certificate III in Close Protection Operations (CPP31418) — training for security professionals who want to specialise in executive protection and close personal security work in the Australian Capital Territory.

This course is designed for individuals pursuing careers in protecting VIPs, corporate executives, government officials, and high-profile individuals. You will develop advanced skills in threat assessment, tactical awareness, operational planning, and the use of defensive techniques.

The ACT Class 1B Bodyguard licence is administered by Access Canberra under the Security Industry Act 2003. To be eligible, you must already hold an ACT Class 1AC Security Officer and Crowd Controller licence.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the Certificate III in Close Protection Operations (CPP31418) — the nationally recognised qualification for bodyguard and close protection work.

This qualification can also provide a pathway to further study in security management, risk consulting, and senior security leadership roles.

Prerequisites:

- Must hold an ACT Class 1AC Security Officer and Crowd Controller licence

- Must hold a current Advanced First Aid certificate (HLTAID014)

Age: Minimum 18 years old (may enrol at 17 years 9 months).

Criminal History: No disqualifying offences in the past 10 years.

Citizenship/Visa: Must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work visa.

ACT-Specific: ACT students must also complete workplace rights and responsibilities training via the United Workers Union.

Physical Capability: Physical fitness required for demanding practical scenarios including defensive techniques, escorts, and emergency response.

International Students: Not open to international students (student visa 500).

- CPPSEC3103 — Determine and implement response to security risk situation

- CPPSEC3105 — Coordinate provision of quality security services to clients

- CPPSEC3121 — Control persons using empty hand techniques

- CPPSEC3122 — Plan provision of close protection services

- CPPSEC3123 — Implement close protection services

- HLTAID014 — Provide advanced first aid

- HLTWHS003 — Maintain work health and safety

Elective Units:

- BSBFLM312 — Contribute to team effectiveness

- CHCCCS020 — Respond effectively to behaviours of concern

- CPPSEC3102 — Maintain operational safety and security of work environment

- CPPSEC3104 — Coordinate monitoring and control of individual and crowd behaviour

- CPPSEC3106 — Gather, organise and present security information and documentation

- CPPSEC3108 — Store, protect and dispose of security information

The ACT Class 1B Bodyguard licence is administered by Access Canberra under the Security Industry Act 2003.

To obtain your Class 1B licence you must:

1. Already hold an ACT Class 1AC licence

2. Hold a current HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid certificate

3. Successfully complete this approved training (CPP31418)

4. Complete ACT workplace rights and responsibilities training

5. Submit a licence application to Access Canberra

6. Pass all probity and suitability checks

- Extension fee (full qualification): $150 per month / $300 per 6 months

- Extension fee (single unit): $50 per month / $150 per 6 months

- Assessment resubmission: $50 per assessment after 2 attempts

- Re-enrolment within 3 months: 25% of course fee; within 4–12 months: 50% of course fee
