Course Overview
The CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations develops the specialised skills required to plan, implement and support close protection services in environments where personal safety, risk mitigation and professional judgement are critical.
Students learn how to assess risk, coordinate protective movements, respond to changing operational conditions and maintain professional conduct when working with high-profile clients, vulnerable individuals or in settings requiring heightened situational awareness.
The program combines practical close protection training with advanced first aid, operational safety and team coordination skills — essential foundations for bodyguard work and protective services roles.
This course is delivered through a blended model across Asset College campuses and regional locations in Queensland by industry-experienced professionals.
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students receive the CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations, building the capability to:
- Plan, coordinate and implement close protection services
- Respond to risk, conflict and security incidents
- Manage protective movements and maintain client safety
- Collect, organise and present operational information
- Apply advanced first aid and maintain work health and safety
- Operate effectively as part of a protective services team
Graduates may use this qualification to support an application for the Bodyguard function on a Queensland Class 1 Security Providers Licence. Employment options depend on individual circumstances, experience, employer requirements and licensing outcomes.
Entry Requirements
Recommendation: Prior security experience is recommended. Completion of CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations is recommended but not mandatory. Students without prior security training may find the course more challenging.
LLND Review: All students must complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) review prior to enrolment.
Age & Probity: Individuals applying for the Bodyguard function on a QLD Class 1 Security Providers Licence must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide valid photo identification
- Be eligible to work in Australia
Digital Requirements: Computer or laptop, reliable internet access, basic digital literacy. Free computer and Wi-Fi access available at Asset College campuses.
International Students: This course is not available to international students on a Student Visa (subclass 500).
Units of Competency
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in 14 units (8 core + 6 elective).

Licensing Requirements
To perform close protection duties in Queensland, individuals must hold the Bodyguard function on a Class 1 Security Providers Licence issued by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
Key Licensing Steps:
1. Prepare required identification and supporting documents
2. Complete the mandatory training (this course)
3. Submit licence application and pay applicable fees to OFT
4. Undergo mandatory probity and criminal history checks
5. Attend an approved Police Station to have fingerprints taken
6. Receive a licensing determination from OFT
If you already hold a QLD Class 1 Security Providers Licence, you can apply to add the Bodyguard function to your existing licence — no new licence application required.
Completing the course satisfies the training component but does not guarantee a licence. Licensing requirements may change — check the most recent information with OFT.
Course Fees & Delivery
$1,750 – Training delivered at an Asset College campus
$1,995 – Training delivered in regional Queensland locations
Fees include: Learning materials, online theory components, 7 days of face-to-face practical training and assessment, and student support services.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): $900 — For eligible candidates completing the course through RPL. Available to individuals who can demonstrate competence through documented industry experience (e.g., Bodyguards with a lapsed licence, Police, Corrections, Defence).
Government Funding: No government funding or subsidies are available for this course.
Delivery: Blended — online theory + 7 days face-to-face. May be reduced to 5 days for students who have previously completed Crowd Control revalidation units AND advanced first aid. Up to 12 months to complete.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you have relevant experience in close protection, bodyguard work, law enforcement, defence or corrections, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the Certificate III in Close Protection Operations.
RPL allows your existing skills and experience to be assessed towards a nationally recognised qualification — often enabling you to complete the course faster and at a lower cost.
